Sustainability

As part of the global forest industry, Stein Lumber takes pride in helping protect our planet’s forests for future generations. Forests filter air and water, sustain biodiversity, and employ over 33 million people worldwide. With Canada being the prime example worldwide for managing vast amounts of forest resources responsibly, British Columbia (BC), the powerhouse of Canada’s lumber production, pioneered many of the developments towards more sustainability.

BC’s woodlands span about 134.4 million acres, an area almost as big as Texas. Only 42% of these forests are eligible for harvesting, with mandatory native species reforestation. The chief forester sets each year’s allowable cut in consultation with First Nations, industry, and the public to ensure both economical and ecological considerations are accounted for.

Roughly a third of BC’s old-growth forests are protected, including the 15.8 million acre Great Bear Rainforest, home to the rare Kermode (Spirit) bear. The 2020 “Special Tree Protection Regulation” further safeguards large old-growth trees. 77% of BC’s forests are certified by third parties, and Canada leads the globe in responsible forestry, accounting for 44% of all certified forests worldwide.
